Hong Kong’s iconic floating restaurant sinks

Hong Kong, June 21 : Hong Kong’s famous floating restaurant has sunk just days after it was towed away from the harbour after nearly 50 years.

BBC quoted the company as saying that the Jumbo restaurant capsized in the South China Sea on Sunday near the Paracel Islands while on its way to an undisclosed location.

The restaurant had “encountered adverse conditions” and began to take on water, the company said, adding that “the water depth at the scene is over 1,000 metres, making it extremely difficult to carry out salvage works.”

Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises said it was “very saddened by the incident” but no crew members were injured.

The restaurant had been closed in March 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world.

The floating restaurant has featured in several movies, including a Bond movie.

Marine engineers had been hired to inspect the floating restaurant before the trip, and “all relevant approvals” had been obtained, BBC reported the owners as saying.

The floating restaurant was supposed to be at an undisclosed location while waiting for a new operator.
