Unhygienic toilets in Hazratbal market irk public

Srinagar, June 4 :The poor condition of public toilets in Hazratbal market area has become a cause of worry among the locals including shopkeepers, vendors, drivers and tourists visiting the markets. As a majority of toilets are in a deplorable condition, the common mass fears of catching diseases.
Locals in the market while speaking to CNS said that the much-hyped Swach Bharat Abhiyan launched by the SMC to ensure sanitation has failed to yield any result as open urination continues due to poor maintenance of these toilets.

“This is the mockery of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan,” they said. “SMC Authorities have failed to implement the scheme in letter and spirit.”

They have to face inconvenience as an unbearable foul smell emanates from the ill-maintained public toilets, which speak volumes about negligence on the part of the authorities.
“SMC must look at the condition of toilets which is becoming cause of multiple diseases and source of infections,” a group of aggrieved drivers told CNS.

“It is a difficult task to use these urinals which stink to high heaven. Owing to the foul smell, last week, I would have vomited inside the toilet had I not ran outside,” one of the visitor said.
A group of students from Kashmir university also voiced resentment saying “these are toilets for public inconveniences not conveniences”.

“My parents have strictly warned me not to use these toilets even in an emergency,” one of the students said.

Meanwhile, they urged the concerned authorities that the toilets should be cleaned at the earliest
