SMC organises first ever workshop for councilors in collaboration with ‘Praja Foundation’

Workshop aims at capacity building & strengthening of connectivity between people and government at local level

Srinagar, Mar 29 :Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today organised it’s first ever three day workshop in collaboration with ‘Praja Foundation’ for all the councilors of Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

The aim of the workshop is empowerment. This kind of a workshop will enable the participants to broaden their knowledge base & concepts regarding urban governance.
Srinagar Mayor , Junaid Azim Mattu who was the Chief Guest on the occasion formally inaugurated the workshop and said that this workshop will improve and augment skill development and capacity building of elected representatives, will assist in exchange of information and empowerment of elected public representatives who are performing their roles and responsibilities in their respective wards as public service.
This workshop will definitely help in broadening the horizons, increase capacity and efficacy for sustainable work mechanism process, Mayor added.
“We are fortunate enough to have this opportunity today and we must reap maximum benefits from this workshop as this is not the one day learning session but many such sessions will be organised so that in the next coming months, the change would be visible and result oriented, stressed Mayor Srinagar.
Commissioner SMC, Athar Amir Khan while welcoming the entire gathering and representatives of Praja Foundation said that the need of this workshop is to have better understanding of roles and responsibilities assigned to us and in making SMC a more effective and a  better Institution.
‘We need to learn that what powers, authority and avenues we have and we also have the significance of transforming our selves while learning for better performance of our roles and responsibilities and for effective public delivery.
He said that our elected representatives representing their wards have a key role at local level in strengthening the connectivity between people and government and by comprehending theses modules and learning process that ‘Praja Foundation’ will stress on, will help in capacity building.
Athar further stressed that the discussions will also be held which will focus on working of committees and raising of relevant issues in the Corporation or Committee meetings.
CEO Praja Foundations, Milind Mhaske said, the workshop will highlight and help in understanding roles and responsibilities of Municipal Councilors and functions of Srinagar Municipal Corporation as per SMC Act.
Secretary SMC,  Mudasir H Chaudhary in his introductory session said that the module of the workshop will be divided into two phases, the first phase will focus on introduction of Praja 74th Amendment, Urban Governance and how to read any Act , the second phase of the workshop will focus on explaining ‘The Jammu And Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act (JKMCA)’ which will help understand their roles and responsibilities.
Priyanka Sharma and Balwant Kirar held various sessions including ‘Three Tier System of Government’, 74th Constitution Amendment Act, Method of reading an Act and feed back and discussions.
Besides Corporators, Senior SMC Officers including Joint Commissioner Administration, Riyaz Ahmed Shah, Joint Commissioner, Syed Abul Qasim were also present.
