Time-Bound Enquiry Ordered Into Ganderbal ‘Self-Immolation’ Incident

Tehsildar Transferred Over ‘Mishandling Of Issue’

Srinagar, Feb 23 : A day after a 27-year-old youth set himself on fire when a demolition squad was about to pull down his newly constructed complex at Harran Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, Divisional administration on Wednesday ordered a time-bound enquiry into the incident.

“Taking cognizance of the media reports of unfortunate incident of alleged self immolation in District Ganderbal on 22nd February, 2022, Khurshid Ahmad Shah, JKAS, Additional District Development Commissioner, Ganderbal is appointed as an Enquiry Officer to enquire into the whole gamut of episode and furnish his findings along with his definite comments/recommendations within a period of 10 days positively”, reads an order by the Divisional Commissioner P K Pole.

“In the meantime, Tehsildar Ganderbal is transferred with immediate effect and his services are kept at the disposal of Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, owing to mishandling the issue”, the order, a copy of which is with GNS, reads further.

Police in a statement said that during the demolition drive undertaken by Irrigation and Flood Control Department over the banks of Nalla Sindh, Amir Hamid Shah son of Nazir Ahmad Shah suddenly appeared from behind the illegal structure and self immolated on its roof in protest against demolition of illegal structure raised on the banks of the water body.

“The person was however, rescued by SHO Ganderbal and locals on spot. He received burn injuries before flames were doused off and was shifted to hospital,” the police said, adding, “A deep trench was dug by the owners of structure to prevent any ingress into the premises which prevented a prompt rescue,” the police said further.
