New Delhi: India recorded 13,405 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours and the country’s active caseload has now dropped below 2 lakh, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data updated on Tuesday (February 22, 2022).

The active cases currently comprise 0.42% of the total infections and stand at 1,81,075, the data updated at 8 am showed. A reduction of reduction of 21,056 cases has been recorded in the active caseload in a span of 24 hours and the daily infections have remained below one lakh for 16 consecutive days now.

According to the Health Ministry, the country’s death toll has climbed to 5,12,344 with 235 fresh fatalities.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease also increased to 4,21,58,510 after 34,226 new recoveries were recorded between Monday and Tuesday morning. Consequently, India’s recovery rate has improved to 98.38%.

India has so far conducted over 76.12 crore Covid-19 tests, of which, 10,84,247 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.24% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.98%, according to the ministry.

Meanwhile, with the administration of more than 35.50 lakh Covid-19 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s vaccination coverage has crossed 175.83 crore. This, the Health Ministry said, has been achieved through 2,00,25,470 sessions.

Earlier on Monday, sources said that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted restricted emergency use authorisation (EUA) to Biological E’s Covid-19 vaccine Corbevax for the 12 to 18 years age group, subject to certain conditions. However, the government has not taken a decision yet on vaccinating those aged below 15 years.

This, notably, is the third vaccine to have received EUA from the DCGI for the age group of 12-18 years after Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV-D and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin. At present, India is using Covaxin to vaccinate adolescents in the 15 to 18 years age group.
