Centre's reply sought on women in military

New Delhi, Jan 18:  The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a detailed response on why intake of women in the National Defence Academy (NDA) and other military run schools and colleges was restricted after the Centre contended that 19 women will be admitted in NDA out of a total of 370 seats.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kaul and comprising Justice M M Sundresh issued a notice to the government on an application that pointed out even for the NDA I-2022 examination, the intake of women has been limited to 19 for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Applicant Kush Kalra contended though the Centre undertook before the apex court to put in place infrastructural requirements for women candidates by May 2022, it has limited the number of intake to less than 20 candidates.

The Centre told the top court that intake of women candidates in the NDA depends on the requirement of the force and agreed to file a detailed affidavit within three weeks.

The bench also recorded in its order the submissions of senior advocate Chinmoy Pradip Sharma representing the applicant.

He said the number of candidates to be inducted is 208 candidates in the Army including 10 women and 42 candidates in the Navy including three women.

Sharma also pointed out that 120 candidates in the IAF are to be inducted including six women. Thus, it is proposed that 19 women, subject to completion of all formalities, should be able to join by June 2022.
