J&K: Gulmarg coldest in valley, Drass freezes at Minus 21.9

Srinagar, Dec 30 :  Barring Gulmarg, the temperature across Kashmir Valley and Ladakh dropped on Thursday with Srinagar recording a low of minus 4.0 degree Celsius.
Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded a temperature of minus 21.9 degree Celsius.

The meteorological department Centre at Srinagar forecasts is dry weather but suggests widespread snow and rain spell of moderate intensity is most likely during January 4-6 in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. There would be further fall in night temperature till January 2, the MeT said.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, recorded a drop of 1.7 degree Celsius than the previous night and was below minus 1.9 degree which is below normal for this time of the year.

The mercury settled at the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg at minus 9.6 degree Celsius against minus 10.4 degree Celsius on the previous night.

Qazigund, on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, had a low of minus 4.2 degree Celsius against 0.6 degree Celsius on the previous night, he said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low temperature of minus 8.9 degree Celsius against minus 6.6 degree Celsius a day ago, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low temperature of minus 3.6 degree Celsius against minus 0.4 degree Celsius on Wednesday, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 4.4 degree Celsius against minus 3.2 degree Celsius on the previous night, the MeT office said.

Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh had a low temperature of minus 16.0 degree Celsius against last night’s minus 14.7 degree Celsius while the temperature recorded at automatic Kargil station was at minus 14.2 degree Celsius.
