J&K: Various parts of the UT record the coldest temperatures of the season so far

Srinagar, Dec 11: Kashmir’s various parts including the capital Srinagar recorded the coldest temperatures of the season so far, officials said on Saturday.

The summer capital of J&K, Srinagar recorded night temperatures of minus 3.6 degree Celsius om Friday night. On the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, the temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 2.6 degrees.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) said the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district was the coldest place in Kashmir. The minimum temperature dropped to minus 6.4 degrees Celsius on Friday.

The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district continues to freeze. The resort recorded a temperature of minus 5.5 degree Celsius.

Almost all other places in Kashmir recorded temperatures in minus during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

South Kashmir’s Qazigund in Kulgam district recorded minus -3.7 degrees, Kokernag in Anantnag minus 3.4 degrees, Anantnag minus 4.6 degrees, Pulwama minus 3.6 degrees, Kulgam minus 2.4 degrees and Shopian minus 5.9 degrees.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara recorded temperatures of minus 4.3 degrees, Bandipora minus 3.2 degrees and Baramulla minus 2.8 degrees.

The winter capital Jammu recorded a temperatures of 6.7 degrees Celsius during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.The union territory of Ladakh continues to freeze with night temperatures continuing to drop.

Leh recorded temperatures of minus 12.1 degrees against last night’s minus 11.0 degrees. Drass in Kargil district recorded a temperature of minus 18.0 degrees, the MeT department said. Kargil recorded temperatures of minus of 10. 6 degrees.

The MeT has predicted mainly dry weather till December 14 in Kashmir .”As of now, light snow/rain in the plains of J&K is most likely during 14(night) -15th(night). Higher reaches especially of North Kashmir may receive moderate snowfall during the above period.

There’s no forecast of any heavy rain/snow during this spell of WD (western disturbances),” a MeT spokesman said. The weather department has predicted light to moderate snow from December 14 night onwards in Ladakh.

“As of now, light to moderate snow is most likely during 14th (night) -15th(night) at places like Sonmarg-Drass axis, Panikhar-Padum and on other higher reaches of Kargil and Leh district during the above period. There is no forecast of any heavy snow during this spell of WD. However, weather will most likely to remain generally cloudy during 14th-16th in Ladakh,” the MeT department said.
