International Solar Alliance granted observer status at UN General Assembly; 'historic decision', says India

New York/New Delhi, Dec 10: In a major recognition of its work and relevance, the UN General Assembly on Thursday granted observer status to the International Solar Alliance, an initiative launched by India.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN TS Tirumurti termed it a historic decision, and said the ISA has become an example of positive global climate action.

UNGA President Abdulla Shahid, who is the foreign minister of the Maldives, also congratulated the ISA on being given observer status.

“Historic decision by UN General Assembly today to grant Observer Status to International Solar Alliance.

“In 6 years, @isolaralliance has become example of positive global climate action through partnerships to benefit global energy growth & development.

“Thank all Member States,” Tirumurti tweeted.

UNGA President Abdulla Shahid in a tweet said:

“Congratulations!!! Today, the General Assembly, based on the Sixth Committee report, adopted resolution 76/123 & unanimously decided to invite the International Solar Alliance to participate in the sessions & work of the General Assembly in the capacity of an “Observer”.”

India’s mission in the UN also tweeted the news and thanked all member states for their support.

“Thank you all the member states for their support to this important initiative.”

The launch of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) was announced on November 30, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Prime Minister of France Francois Hollande, at the COP-21 in Paris, France.

The ISA is an alliance of 124 countries, most of them being sunshine countries, which lie either completely or partly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
