Cold weather continues to prevail in Kashmir, Ladakh, forecast of light snow in upper reaches

Weather to remain dry till Thursday ‘Temperatures drop considerably in Vally’

Srinagar, Dec 8 : There was a slight improvement in night temperature at most places of Kashmir valley and Ladakh due to partly cloudy and fair sky, however cold freezing conditions continued to prevail in both Union Territories on Wednesday.

The Meteorological Department in a fresh weather forecast predicts light snow at isolated places in the higher reaches of Kashmir valley and Ladakh for the next two days from midnight Wednesday. The weather will mainly remain dry till December 15, with warmer days and colder nights, the MET office said.

Weather generally will remain cloudy at most places of Leh district and Panikhar-Zanskar area of Kargil district of Ladakh may cause light snow over mountains, the MET office said and added except light snow over Zojjila Pass, Drass, Gilgit from tonight, the weather will mainly remain dry till December 15, the MET office said. However, day temperatures will improve and nights will be colder.

Drass, which experienced the coldest night of the season on Tuesday at minus 18.4 degree Celsius was at minus 14.5 degree Celsius on Wednesday. Leh was at minus 8.7 against minus 12.1 and Kargil minus 8.7 against minus 9.6 degrees Celsius recorded at Air Force Stations of the union territory.
There was a slight improvement in cold conditions in Kashmir valley on Wednesday due to cloudy sky at most places and night temperature at Srinagar was recorded at 0.4 degree Celsius against minus 1.4 degree recorded a day ago.

The ski resort of Gulmarg which experienced colder nights for two consecutive days at minus 7 degrees Celsius was recorded at minus 6.0 degree Celsius on Wednesday, the Meteorological Department said.

Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway showed a dip in temperature recorded at minus 1.6 degree Celsius against minus 0.2 degree Celsius previous day, while Kokernag was at minus 1.4 degree Celsius against the minus 1.2 degrees Celsius recorded on Tuesday.

Similarly, the night temperature in the tourist resort of Pahalgam showed an improvement of over one degree and was recorded at minus 3.4 degree Celsius against minus 4.8 degrees Celsius recorded a day ago.

The minimum temperature in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara was recorded at minus 1.4 degree Celsius as against the 1.0 degrees Celsius the previous day, the MET office said.
