J&K: Crime Branch charges lawyer “drawing family pension” of deceased wife after re-marriage

Srinagar, Dec 4:J&K’s Crime Branch Kashmir produced a chargesheet before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar here on Saturday against a lawyer for illegally drawing the family pension of his deceased wife even after his re-marriage.

Omkar Singh, a resident of Harduchaman Rafiabad Baramulla is accused by the Crime Branch of illegally drawing the family pension of his deceased wife Naseeb Kour, who died in 2003.

A statement issued by the Crime Branch said they had received a complaint from Balbir Kour alleging that Singh is illegally drawing the family pension of his deceased wife even after his re-marriage.
“Consequent to the complaint a preliminary enquiry was initiated. During the probe, it was ascertained that accused Omkar Singh had knowingly and fraudulently drawn an amount of Rs 2.91 lacs as family pension in the name of Naseeb Kour, even after his re-marriage. Accordingly an FIR was registered at police station Crime Branch Kashmir and investigation set into motion,” the statement said.

During the course of investigation, relevant records were seized and statements of persons familiar with the facts and circumstances of the case were also recorded under relevant sections of laws, it added.

“The investigation conducted has revealed that the accused Omkar Singh is an advocate by profession and had married the deceased Naseeb Kour in 1984. The said the deceased was serving as Headmistress of a Government Higher Secondary School in Anantnag, and had died on August 11, 2003 as per the death certificate issued by concerned Police Station. Thereafter, it was found the accused was receiving the family pension through the government treasury at Anantnag and subsequently at Srinagar,” it said.
“The investigation further revealed that after the death of Naseeb Kour, the accused has married for the second time. He knowingly and fraudulently obtained the family pension in the name of Naseeb Kour even after her death and after marrying for the second time,” it added.
