SC to continue hearing Lakhimpur Kheri violence case today

New Delhi, Nov 15: Supreme Court will today continue hearing the petitions seeking a CBI probe into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence wherein 8 people had lost their lives, including farmers, who were allegedly mowed down by a four-wheeler belonging to Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on October 3.

A three-judge bench of the Apex Court, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana and also comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Surya Kant, will continue to hear the case today.

Senior lawyer and former Solicitor General (SG) Harish Salve, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh state government, had in the last date of hearing sought more time till Monday, from the Supreme Court to carry out SC’s suggestion to appoint either former Punjab and Haryana High Courts retired judge Ranjit Singh and or Rakesh Kumar Jain (also retired) for supervision of SIT probe into the case of alleged Lakhimpur Kheri incidents – mowing down of 4 farmers, lynching of 3 accused & murder of a journalist.

The Supreme Court had allowed his plea and fixed the matter for further hearing today.

The Top Court had in one of its last hearings wrapped up the Uttar Pradesh govt and police over a sketchy investigation calling it to behave in a much more “responsible manner” in the future.

The Apex court had also said that the Uttar Pradesh Police is dragging its feet in the probe and shall dispel the same in action.

The Apex Court registered the petition, on its own, on the basis of letters written by two lawyers seeking investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the brutal incident.

The Lakhimpur Kheri alleged violence incident had happened, wherein 8 people had lost their lives, including farmers, who were allegedly mowed down by a four-wheeler belonging to Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on October 3.
