JNU: Clash between ABVP & Left leaves dozen students hurt, 3 serious

New Delhi, Nov 15: Around a dozen students got hurt and three have sustained severe injuries after a clash broke out in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) between members of ABVP and the left alliance from AISA and SFI.

Those who sustained serious injuries are getting treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi, members of student wings told UNI.A formal complaint has also been submitted to the Delhi Police, ABVP-JNU said.

Eyewitnesses said that the incident was reported around 10 pm on Sunday at the students’ union office of the varsity. However, members from both sides are alleging each other for starting the violence.

Shivam Chaurasia, President, ABVP-JNU said that the student wing was holding a meeting at the student activity centre of the Student Union office when members from AISA and SFI barged in and asked ABVP students to leave.

“We were told that the spot can only be used by the students’ union which is wrong. The activity centre is open to all the students. When we resisted, they started attacking us with chairs,” he told UNI.

However, JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) President Aishe Ghosh refuted the allegations by ABVP and said that the attack was instigated by the ABVP only.

“The venue was already booked for a program of a different organisation. ABVP reached and started their own meeting. I and other office bearers of JNUSU reached the spot to talk to them. When we repeatedly asked them to move their session to some other place, the group (ABVP) got violent and eventually attacked us. One of our members has received serious injuries,” she said.

Ghosh also said a formal complaint will be registered against ABVP by the students from the left-wing who got injured in the clash.
