30 Indian officers receive UN Medal for contribution in South Sudan mission

United Nations, Oct 25 (UNI) Thirty officers from India, including women, received the UN Medal for their service to the cause of sustainable peace in South Sudan.

The UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, thanked the 30 Indian officers for their commitment.

“30 @UNPOL officers from India received the @UN medal for their service to the cause of sustainable peace in South Sudan. Their deployment came at a time when the young country is facing conflict, displacement and COVID19. UNMISS thanks them for their commitment,” it said in a tweet, with the hashtag Action for Peacekeeping.

The officers belonged to the United Nations Police, which is a division of the UN Peacekeeping Operations.

The conferring of medals happened on UN Day, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat address said that India has always worked for world peace, which is seen in the country’s contribution to the UN Peacekeeping forces. He said India is also playing a leading role in addressing issues related to poverty alleviation, climate change and workers.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a tweet on Sunday, said that India will always be a constructive force in enhancing UN’s effectiveness and reliability.

“On UN Day, as a founding member, reaffirm India’s commitment to @UN.“Reiterate importance of reformed multilateralism that reflects rebalancing, fairness and multipolarity.

“As non-permanent member of UNSC, will take a principled approach towards contemporary challenges.“India will always be a constructive force in enhancing UN’s effectiveness and reliability,” he posted.
