Covid response has brought out limitations of current multilateralism: EAM at CICA

Nur Sultan (Kazakhstan)/New Delhi, Oct 12 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said the response to Covid has brought out the limitations of the current multilateralism and the case for reformed multilateralism is strong.

Addressing the 6th Ministerial meeting of the Conference of Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in the Kazakh capital, he also said that “Cross-border terrorism is not statecraft. It is simply another form of terrorism.”

In a series of tweets on his address, the EAM said: “Addressed the 6th meeting of CICA FMs. Made seven important points:

“1. India’s internationalism (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam) drives our Vaccine Maitri.

2. Covid response has brought out the limitations of current multilateralism. Case for reformed multilateralism is strong.

3.Sustainable development requires a sustainable lifestyle.

4. Cross-border terrorism is not statecraft. It is simply another form of terrorism.

5. Connectivity must respect the most basic principle of international relations– respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Post pandemic world requires resilient and reliable supply chains, greater trust and transparency and additional engines of growth,” he posted.

Kazakhstan is the current Chair and initiator of the CICA Forum.The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is a forum aimed at enhancing cooperation through elaborating multilateral approaches towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia. CICA was established at the initiative of then

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the 47th UNGA in 1992.It has 27 members including India and Pakistan.

The region covered by CICA stretches from the Pacific to the Mediterranean and from the Ural to the Indian Ocean, covering more than 50 percent of the world’s population.
