Jaishankar urges greater economic cooperation between Mexico, India

Mexico City/New Delhi, Sep 29 : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has urged for greater economic cooperation between Mexico and India, and asked Mexican businesses to invest in India.

At a meeting with Mexican and Indian business persons in Mexico City on Tuesday, Jaishankar also addressed some issues faced by Indian companies operating in that country, including in the field of ICT and pharma.

In a tweet, he said that greater economic cooperation should drive the Privileged Partnership between the two nations.

“A productive engagement with Mexican business representatives and Indian companies operating in Mexico.

“Made a case to Mexican business on the attractions of investing in India.

“Encouraged Indian business to enhance our exports, in line with PM @narendramodi’s directive.

“Specific issues faced by ICT, pharma, agro, auto and food industries were addressed.

“Greater economic cooperation should drive our privileged partnership,” he posted.

Jaishankar also visited Teotihuacan, an ancient Mesoamerican city located 50 km northeast of Mexico City. The city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

He also represented India at the celebrations of Mexico’s 200th anniversary of attaining Independence.

This is his first visit to Mexico as EAM.

His visit, from September 26-28, was at the invitation of his Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón to participate in the commemorative events of the 200th anniversary of the consolidation of Mexican Independence along with other world leaders.

In 2007, the two countries upgraded their bilateral relations to a Privileged Partnership. In 2016, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mexico, the two countries decided to develop a roadmap to upgrade their relationship to a Strategic Partnership.

A large number of Indian information technology (IT) companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Hexaware, Tech Mahindra, NIIT, etc., have established themselves as big names in Mexico. Pharma majors like Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s, Ranbaxy, Wockhardt and auto component manufacturers like PMP Auto, JK Tyre, etc., have set up facilities and plants in Mexico.
