Reports: Rohit Sharma to take over white-ball captaincy from Virat Kohli after T20 World Cup

The upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 is scheduled to begin on October 17. All the teams are gearing up for it after naming their squads. Team India recently named its 15-member squad for the same. Virat Kohli will lead the team with Rohit Sharma being named as his deputy. But things could change in terms of leadership after the T20 World Cup.

If reports are to be believed, then Kohli is likely to step down from the limited-overs setup and hand over the reins to Rohit Sharma. Several reports were surfacing as to how Hitman should be handed the reins at least in the T20 format due to his colossal record as captain in the shortest format for Mumbai Indians. Incidentally, Rohit has won five titles for his team as opposed to Kohli, who has not won a trophy yet for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

“Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been- the best batsman in the world,” The Times of India quoted sources as saying.

Virat Kohli’s dip in form started late in 2019, and he has not scored a hundred since the one he got against Bangladesh in the Pink ball Test. He has scored fifties but has failed to convert those into three-figures mark in all three formats. But that has not had an impact on leadership as India have gone to beat top nations.

The skipper’s record is phenomenal in the white-ball formats as he led India in 95 ODIs winning 65 and losing 27 of those with a staggering win percentage of 70.43. In T20I format, Kohli has led India 45 times, winning 27 times and losing 14 games.

Rohit Sharma likely to get the white-ball captaincy

On the other hand, whenever Kohli was handed rest by the management, Rohit Sharma has ably filled in as the leader and has lost just two times while leading the team in 10 ODIs. In the shortest format, the 34-year-old has led India to 15 victories in 19 games.

Also, the India opener comes in with a vast amount of experience in terms of leadership and his record in the franchise T20 cricket is unparalleled.
According to reports, Kohli, Rohit, and management have had several meetings in the past few months over the change in terms of leadership in the limited-overs format.
