All commercial flights at Kabul Int’l Airport suspended

Kabul, Aug 16 (UNI) All commercial flights at the Hamid Karzai International Airport have been suspended, local media reported citing a statement.

“All commercial flights are suspended at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, a statement reads.

The statement calls on the people to avoid crowds at the airport,” TOLOnews tweeted on Monday.

The development comes a day after Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani fled the country on Sunday evening. Later, in a Facebook post, he said that he had left Afghanistan to prevent a “flood of blood” in the country, after the Taliban took over Kabul.

Amid growing tension and uncertainty in Kabul, Air India’s flight from Afghan capital last night landed at the Delhi airport around 2000 hrs with 129 passengers.

More flights are planned over the coming weeks but the airline is not sure of actually operating them as the crisis is set to deepen. It has increased weekly flight frequency to 7 from 3 in the light of increased travel demand from the crisis-ridden country.
