Badgam encounter: Militant killed, another arrested, says IGP

Srinagar, Aug 7 (UNI) A militant was killed by security forces and another, who managed to escape from the encounter site in central Kashmir district of Badgam in a truck, was arrested along with driver in Pulwama.

On a specific information Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF launched a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at Mochwa on Srinagar-Charar-e-Sharief road in Badgam district in the wee hours of Saturday, a police spokesman said.

He said an encounter ensued when militants hiding in the area opened fire when security forces were sealing the area.

An unidentified militant was killed and one AK rifle and a pistol were recovered from him, he said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar said that the second militant had escaped from the encounter site. However, a lead was received that the second militant had escaped in a truck.

Later, the militant was arrested at Khrew in Pulwama and some arms and ammunition, including one pistol and a grenade, recovered from him.

Mr Kumar said the truck driver, who helped militant to escape, has also been arrested.
