ASI dies fortnight after consuming poison in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 19 :An Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of J&K police, who allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison in a police station in south Kashmir district of Kulgam about a fortnight ago, died in a hospital in the summer capital, Srinagar, on Wednesday.

Official sources said that the ASI (name withheld) allegedly consumed some poisonous substance while he was on duty at Kulgam Police Station on May 5. “The police officer was immediately taken to a local hospital from where he was referred to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura in a critical condition,” they said.

They said the ASI died at SKIMS early on Wednesday morning. “After completing all the legal and medical formalities, the body of the deceased was handed over to his relatives for last rites,” they said, adding the officer is a resident of Tangmarg in Baramulla district.

“It was not known why he took this extreme step,” they said, adding a case has already been registered and investigation is going on to ascertain the circumstances which forced him to end his life.
