Severe cold wave sweeps Kashmir, Srinagar temperature dips to minus 8.2 deg C

Srinagar, Minimum temperatures dropped sharply across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, triggering severe cold wave conditions.

Srinagar city recorded the low of minus 8.2 degrees Celsius on the intervening night of January 15 and 16 – down from minus 7.6 degrees Celsius the previous night, Kashmir Weather, an independent weather forecaster said.

The night temperature at Pahalgam resort, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, settled at a low of minus 9.4 degrees Celsius – down from minus 8.6 degrees Celsius yesterday.

The ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius last night.

Qazigund – the gateway town to the valley – in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 10.0 degrees Celsius – lower than the previous night’s minus 8.3 degrees Celsius. Kokernag town, also in south, recorded a low of minus 8.7 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara, in north, registered the minimum of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund was the coldest place in the Valley.

Jammu city recorded 6.2 degrees Celsius, Katra 6.2, Batote 5.1, Banihal 5.6 and Bhaderwah 1.2 as the night’s lowest temperatures.

Leh town, in the Ladakh Union territory, recorded a low of minus 12.1 degrees Celsius – down from the previous night’s minus 11.6 degrees Celsius. The mercury in the nearby Drass town settled at a low of minus 25.8 degrees Celsius – point five degrees down from minus 25.3 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Kashmir Weather has forecasted that cold wave conditions are likely to continue till 21 January.
