The harvest festival celebrated across India – Makar Sankranti – is known as Poush
Sankranti mainly in West Bengal, Assam and in parts of eastern India.
The rituals, puja and and traditional customs revolve around special food items, which
are cooked in households only during the Sankranti or Uttarayan season
Even though Sankranti is known by different names in different states of India, the
theme is same everywhere. It is a celebration of a bumper harvest and people offer
prayers and special food items to their household deities, Goddess Lakshmi or Lord
