Day after DC’s visit:Patients, attendants stage protest after doctors go for 2 hour strike, close OPDs in South Kashmir hospitals

Anantnag, Jan 11, KNT: Attendants here in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district staged a protest and blocked the road after the doctors at Government Medical College and Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) went for two hours strike and closed the OPDs in response to the disciplinary action sought from them by District Development Commissioner for remaining absent from duty.

Pertinently, Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, K K Sidha, during a ‘surprise visit’ found 17 doctors of the Maternity and Childcare Hospital (MCCH) absent from their duties yesterday. These doctors were found absent despite the fact that directions were passed asking all public offices to remain open in view of post snowfall situation on Sunday.

Local sources told news agency KNT that doctors at GMC and MCCH Anantnag went on strike on Monday as a result patients and attendants too staged protest against these doctors saying they have been suffering due to callous attitude of these medicos. “These medicos closed OPDs in both hospital and cared a fig for the patient care. We were left with no option but to protest,” said an attendant who was part of the protest at Jangalat Mandi Anantnag.

These protesters blocked the road for not getting treatment in the hospitals.

Pertinently, District Development Commissioner had said that those doctors who were found absent from duty were restoring to private practice. He sought disciplinary action against the erring doctors. Out of 25 doctors including medical officers, consultants and associate professors, only eight were found present when DC Anantnag visited MCCH yesterday.

Meanwhile, Doctors at Sub-District Hospital Kokernag also observed two hours pen down strike as a mark of protest for yesterday’s action against medicos by District Development Commissioner Anantnag. The strike caused inconvenience to patients who were waiting for the treatment. (KNT)
