Srinagar Mayoral Election: ‘Democracy Being Assaulted’ says Junaid Azim Mattu

Srinagar 25 November (KNB): As the election for Mayor of Srinagar, SMC is being conducted, the former Mayor of Srinagar Junaid Azim Mattu says that democracy is being assaulted, as a group allegedly led by former deputy mayor Sheikh Imran is not allowing the voting to start.

Mattu tweeted a video recorded within the SMC Corporator Hall and said, “Group led by Sheikh Imran- after realizing their imminent and clear defeat in open ballot- not allowing voting to start since an hour!”

He added, “Glasses thrown at our corporators who continue to sit peacefully.”

“Democracy being assaulted,” Mattu further said.

The election for the chief of the 74-member Srinagar Municipal Corporation, who is elected through a popular vote, is being conducted today.

Pertinently, three candidates have filed their nomination papers for the post of Mayor, which includes former Mayor SMC Junaid Azim Mattu, ex-Deputy Mayor SMC Sheikh Imran and a Congress candidate Aijaz Rasool. (KNB)
