At least 43 killed as mine collapses in DRC

Kinshasa, : Forty-three people were killed as a mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Lualaba province, local media reported.
“The victims were miners, who had been illegally working at the mine despite the prohibition to do that. The incident took place on Thursday,” provincial governor Richard Muyej Manguez Mans said.
The mine was operated by Kamoto Copper Company, which runs cobalt and copper mines in the area. Last year, the company was forced to suspend its exports of cobalt after traces of uranium were found in its material.
The collapse is Kamoto’s deadliest accident since 2016 when a 250 metre pit wall collapsed, killing six miners, of which five were employed by Kamoto.
