Coup attempt: Venezuela removes parliamentary immunity of 7 opposition lawmakers

Caracas,  :  The Venezuelan Constituent National Assembly removed parliamentary immunity from seven opposition lawmakers, who supposedly took part in the recent failed coup in the country, so that they could be prosecuted, Diosdado Cabello, the head of the Constituent National Assembly, said on Wednesday.
The country’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice has requested the assembly to strip immunity from the lawmakers, suspected of being engaged in the fresh attempt to oust President Nicolas Maduro, in order to be able to bring them before court.
Meanwhile, the tribunal has not launched a case against Juan Guaido, the head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, which all other government branches have been refusing to recognize since 2016.
“The Constituent National Assembly approves the decision to remove immunity from the seven lawmakers and sends this information to the Supreme Tribunal of Justice of Venezuela,” Cabello said.
Edgar Jose Zambrano, Luis Florido, Henry Ramos Allup, Richard Blanco, Marianela Lopez, Simon Calzadilla and Americo de Grazia lost their immunity. The prosecution charges them with high treason, public conspiring for violating law, inciting civil uprising, and power usurpation, among other crimes.
