SC refuses relief to Mayawati against EC’s gag order for hate speeches

New Delhi, Apr 16 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati’s plea challenging Election Commission’s 48-hour ban on her for hate speeches during the Lok Sabha poll campaign.
Since the EC has stated that it had ample powers to deal with Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation, there is no further order required to be made in the case, the court observed.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, said, “We won’t pass any order. The EC has stated it about its ample power.”
The EC, which was clueless on Monday during the course of the hearing, today submitted to the Apex Court that they have ample powers to deal with MCC violation.
Dushyant Dave, senior lawyer appearing for Ms Mayawati, said, where is the time to challenge the EC order.
The BSP supremo, who was scheduled to address several rallies in 48 hours, has been asked by the top court to challenge the EC order in a court of law.
Ms Mayawati has been barred from electioneering on Tuesday and Wednesday for her provocative speeches while seeking votes from the minority community last week in Deoband.
