Setback for Vijay Mallya: Modest progress made in extradition process

New Delhi, Apr 9  :  Indian agencies and the prosecution in UK seemed to have made significant progress in terms of getting extradition of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya as a London Court yet again rejected his plea against his extradition process.
According to sources in the Indian government, Mallya has now “four-five working days till April 12 to make a second application to the court to admit his appeal”.
On April 5, the High Court in United Kingdom has “refused permission” to Mallya to appeal against the decision of the Secretary of State and the district Judge ordering his extradition to India.
The next step for Mallya and in the UK court will involve a brief oral hearing during which counsels for Mallya and the prosecution – on behalf of Indian government – can renew their respective claims.
The entire extradition process could still take a few weeks time.
Earlier, on Feb 4, the extradition of Vijay Mallya was approved by UK Home Secretary giving a boodt to the Modi government’s efforts to bring back the fugitive businessman.
The 63-year-old business tycoon had been found to have a case to answer before the Indian courts by Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London.
