Biden leads US Presidential polls

Washington, Nov 4 (UNI) As the counting of votes began in the US Presidential elections, Democratic candidate Joe Biden has taken an early lead against the Republican candidate Donald Trump.

According to latest update, Biden is currently leading on 227 seats with 4,82,12,926 votes or 38.85 per cent of votes polled in his favour.

However, incumbent Donald Trump has won 14 states, including Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wyoming, Indiana and South Carolina. Trump is currently leading on 145 seats.

Trump was also leading his rival in the vital battleground state of Florida, while other competitive swing states that will help decide the election, including North Carolina, remained up in the air.

As of now, Democratic party Challenger Joe Biden has emerged victorious in 11 States mainly traditional democratic party strongholds- Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico New York, Rhode Island Vermont and Virginia.

The election witnessed a high turnout of 67 per cent.

The candidate who gains 270 or more of the 538 Electoral College votes becomes President. Electors are representatives of their party in a state who pledge to vote for a specific candidate.

Most of the votes counted during early counting voting to mails and were expected to favour democrats, Republicans expect voting in person which took place in November 3 to be more in their favour.

Earlier in the day, expressing confidence to win the Presidential polls, Trump tweeted, “WE ARE LOOKING REALLY GOOD ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. THANK YOU!”

Former president Barack Obama, too, posted a video on social media asking the people of America to vote in favour of Biden. “This Election Day, everything is on the line. Our jobs. Our health care. Whether or not we get this pandemic under control. But here’s the good news: today, you can choose change. You can elect Joe Biden

and Kamala Harris. Let’s win this thing”, he wrote on Twitter.

In a live broadcast by UNI straight from the battleground, experts favouring Biden were disappointed over Trump winning the Florida seat. “We are optimistic and its too early to tell about any outcome”, one of the panelist remarked.

There is a sizeable Indian Diaspora in the US which this time seems inclined towards electing Biden as the next President.

Notably, the Indian American population is the second-largest immigrant group in the country after Mexicans.
