SC nixes Oppn’s plea on VVPAT

New Delhi, :  The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a plea filed by 21 political parties seeking 50 per cent verification of VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) slips.
The Apex Court said that it is not inclined to hear review petitions filed by the opposition political parties and that it is not obliged to hear them when lawyers from opposition parties insisted that SC should allow them to argue the case.
A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi dismissed the review petitions.
“We are not inclined to hear the review Petitions filed by the 21 opposition parties, ” the CJI said.
Opposition lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, while speaking to reporters outside the court, said “We respect the court immensely and we must bow down to the court’s majesty”. He further said the plea filed by them didn’t mean to disrespect the courts earlier order.
On April 8, the Top Court directed the Election Commission to increase the random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs in five polling booths per Assembly segment from one booth.
